Today we look at a god for our times - the lateborn god Dionysus. He is the god of decadents like our own high civilisation. Dionysus is a very important figure in the philosophy of Nietzsche; he is the counterpoint to the Apollonian - the ordered composed principle. For Nietzsche Apollonian vs Dionysian is a very important divide and from a Spiral Dynamics it marks an entry into the Spiral Dynamics second tier thinking - the ideal is no longer above us in the sky but beneath us in the integration of our instinctual natures. After he had gone mad in a square in Turin in 1889, Nietzsche began signing letters as Dionysus the Crucified some with one name some with the other; he had drifted into psychosis and there become identified with the Crucified and Dionysus; these can be seen as the Scylla and Charybdis he spent his career navigating between and it seems that finally the tension tore him apart.
