The most spectacular hike we have ever been on by far! Everything was so gorgeous. Plus some cool wildlife encounters 😉
Last summer Laura and I went up to Glacier National Park after the roads had opened so that we could go up to the Many Glacier part of the park and hike our very favorite trail - Grinnell Glacier.
This trail is a moderately difficult, highly trafficked trail, but the views just can't be beat!
The portion that follows the lakes (Swiftcurrent lake and lake Josephine) is very flat and can be bypassed by using the ferries. From that point on, every moment along the Grinnell Glacier trail comes with a million dollar view.
This trail rises 1,500 feet above the turquoise blue Grinnell Lake with the shear walls of Mount Gould rising another 3,000 above that. All of this dramatic landscape makes for the most breathtaking hike I have ever been on.
Driving through Glacier National Park can truly be an experience of a lifetime, but it is always amazing what you find when you get out of your car and go as far as your feet will take you.
Be sure to bring along bear spray, as encounters with bears on not uncommon. Last year, Laura and I took my mom up to Glacier and we ran into a couple who said that they saw a bear no more than 40 feet up the trail. While wildlife encounters can be exhilarating, it is important to remember that every year people are injured in the national parks by wildlife that people failed to give enough space.
We were happy to run into a momma and baby mountain goat, and a big horn sheep on our trail. What an exciting hike!
There is a sense of breathlessness that you get when moving through a landscape like that of Grinnell Glacier trail that is difficult to capture in pictures and video. I hope that we have brought some small semblance of that to you in this video.
I also hope that this video encourages some of you to get out and explore some of our amazing National Parks! I hope that those of you who have close access to Glacier National Park take the next opportunity that you have to go and make a visit. And while you are there, be sure to make the beautiful trek that is Grinnell Glacier trail!
