Dear You Angels,
There is a lot to say about my experience at Night to Shine in Pleasanton last Friday, but
first a word of thanks and appreciation to those of you who planned and executed this
massive, loving event. I can’t even imagine how many meetings, emails and phone calls
it took to pull off this event and provide such a safe, exciting environment for us! My
heart, along with many others from whom you will never hear, was infused with feelings
of joy, love and total acceptance, if only for one evening.
We all were welcomed to an event which celebrated us as we are - God’s perfect
creations, just like you, in his eyes. Volunteers welcomed us, danced with us, gave us
yummy food and liquid to keep us hydrated. They encouraged us to participate in the
ways we felt comfortable, not those expected from societal mandates. We often fail at
meeting such lofty goals which are made sans (without) considering our unique life
situations and what causes us stress and anxiety.
For this one night of socializing each year, we are kings and queens, hence the crowns
and tiaras (nice touch, by the way). I only wish all of society could have watched the
actions, felt the loving energy and seen the smiles shared between volunteers and
guests that evening. The acceptance and inner desire to appreciate the differences we
all have one from another, would have the ripple effect; that of a stone thrown in a lake
as still as glass. We would then all be accepted and respected for who we are. That’s
the biggest gift of the evening for me.
This is for all of you…
I arrived - bravely parted from parents and caregivers, and entered the first room.
Registration, photos, crowns and tiaras.
I waited - to be transported to the red carpet like a movie star.
Patience, curiosity, excitement with many ounces of hitch-hiking anxiety.
I disembarked - left the limo to walk the red carpet into the dance hall.
Scared, but curious enough to continue and excited to play amongst the party
people.
I entered - the loud room with the electric energy. We could have lit up an entire city with
it!
Grabbed by the lights and sounds, captured by its magnetism, comforted by my
dates and friends.
I ate - filled with scrumptious food and gassed up with a bit of sugar, I was ready.
Satiated, confident and ready to release my inner dancing self.
I danced - moved my arms, legs, hips and feet and smiled at my friends while watching
the crowd.
Amazed, lifted up, free to let loose and enthralled at the spectacle I was
witnessing and feeling around me.
I rested - in the quiet room for some respite from the intensity of fun.
Comforting, relaxing, deep breaths of solace.
I returned - looking for Mom and a fork which would enable me to continue eating my
meat and potatoes. I am 16 years old and always hungry, it seems.
Happy, grateful and a bit tired.
I returned home - eager to experience my pajamas, long green pillow, my bed and fuzzy
blanket.
Exhausted, peaceful and totally loved.
I changed - and I am not the same person I was before.
I am more full of love from the kindness I received Friday night; from my friends who
danced with me and from total strangers. When one receives a gift like this, how can one
possibly remain the same inside? As humans, it’s impossible because we react innately
inside. Love is felt and our hearts expand.
Thank you all for expanding mine last Friday night. I love changing like that!
Blessings to you until we meet again,
Love,
Matteo Musso
