This was a VERY abundant growing space for us until we moved away for a couple of years and the drought left it in need of some future focussed upgrades. The amazing Jo from Full Cycle Permaculture included excellent instructions in our design report to create hybrid Hugelkulture / wicking beds for this space to make it more drought resistant, to keep the plants moist for longer periods of time, and to create nutrient rich soil for a long time to come as the logs underneath break down. We have been using lots of logs we've had stored for a few years at the rear of the property and we love the rusted ideal edging and design as a feature. We also made these beds raised to help with the back as we age!! The soil we created with Jo at a workshop held here in January was just brimming with worms and we're excited for the first harvest from this new space. Our first plantings include fennel, brassicas, silverbeet and companion flowers such as marigold, calendula and borage. Allan just needs to net it off so the chickens can free range again without demolishing the seedlings!
