Mayor of Toronto John Tory announced on Wednesday that the city's street food vendors, food trucks and ice cream trucks are now permitted to resume operations, just in time for the summer.
Tory stressed on the importance of continuing to adhere to public health measures and practicing physical distancing, saying "customers should maintain two meters distance while waiting in lines."
The mayor said he conducted a meeting with the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) mayors and chairs earlier Wednesday when they expressed a unanimous concern on the urgent need of significant financial support from both the federal and provincial governments.
He added that the mayors and chairs have positively noted the increase of COVID-19 testing capacity and called for more mobile testing units to be available across the area.
Mayor Tory also said that this weekend, 10 kilometres of major roads will be open to cyclists, runners and walkers in the biggest ActiveTO road closure by far.
Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto's medical officer of health, reported a total of 11,652 cases of COVID-19 in the city, an increase of 139 cases since yesterday.
To date, there have been 845 deaths due to COVID-19 in Toronto.
