The Pillars of Creation were made famous for the first time by Hubble Telescope images in 1995. And were recognised as a vast accumulation of dust and gas where new stars are actively forming. As young stars form, they emit jets of material. As this material collides with the surrounding gas, shock waves are generated. Shock waves are the bright red undulating regions at the edges of some of the pillars. The brilliant red circles are young stars clearing a space in the surrounding gas. Only a few hundred thousand years old, these stars are infants in stellar terms.
This is why it is referred to as the Pillars of Creation because so many stars are born there.
It’s obvious that the newly formed stars are the scene-stealers in this image from Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). These are the bright red orbs with diffraction spikes that are typically found outside one of the dusty pillars. When knots of sufficient mass form within the gas and dust pillars, they begin to collapse under their own gravity, heat up gradually, and eventually form new stars.
While Hubble captured hints of these newly-forming stars, Webb's new image highlights their locations in crimson red. According to NASA, this colour is caused by the supersonic jets of energetic particles emitted by these young stars and the bow shocks generated by these jets as they plough through the dust and gas of the nebula.
