Understanding what your customers want is huge. Have you ever made the mistake of creating a product you think your audience should want?
Jamie Sears, teacher and CEO of Not So Wimpy Teacher, points out that's a common pitfall for entrepreneurs. She talks about creating a product or lead magnet and thinking this is what her audience needs. But, then she's learned that the audience doesn't think they need that product - and it's not going to be a profitable product.
Jamie talks about the research phase of online course creation. She shares a story about her creating an online course for teachers about teaching whole group math. She made an outline about what she thought each module would be about but then surveyed teachers. What challenges did they have teaching whole group math? What was their favorite and least favorite part? She asked about the time and resources they had to teach this subject. Then she compiled their answers and says the answers tell the story. From there, she thought how she could solve their current needs and formulated the course around that.
She shares that online course sellers have to remember where their customers are now so they can be effective in designing their materials. It's not about being prescriptive but truly understanding what customers need and want.
