The World Health Organization (WHO) officials provided an update on Thursday regarding the latest COVID-19 cases and measures taken globally.
The World Health Organization's chief scientist urged countries to support the "COVAX" financing initiative, a scheme designed to guarantee fast and equitable access globally to the vaccines.
More than 75 countries have expressed an interest in joining "COVAX", which is co-led by the GAVI vaccines alliance, the WHO and the CEPI Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations. Its aim is to deliver 2 billion doses of effective, approved COVID-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also acknowledged the spikes in the number of new COVID-19 cases in some countries, saying they were driven partly by young people letting their guards down, but that the world needed to learn to live with the disease.
"We've said this before and we'll say it again: young people are not invincible," WHO director-general Tedros told the news briefing, adding recent "spikes have been driven by young people letting down their guard in the northern hemisphere summer."
Worldwide coronavirus cases surpassed 17 million late Wednesday, just hours before the six-month anniversary of WHO’s declaration of a global health emergency.
