Scottish Water is restoring two peatland sites on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides. Peatland restoration not only stabilises natural carbon stored in peat, it also reduces peatland erosion by increasing the water table. If peat dries out, dried organic matter washes into our reservoirs. Removing the organic matter uses vast amounts of energy - and energy is carbon. So peatland restoration is a win win for the planet!
