This happy little flower gets its name from its uncanny resemblance to a smiling bumblebee; So if bumblebees could smile, they would look exactly like this. Its name comes from the Greek word “Ophrys” meaning eyebrow, perhaps referring to the fuzzy patches on the edge of the flower. Bee Orchid is common in Europe, the Middle East and even North Africa. However, it is becoming increasingly scarce because the propagation process is very complex. You see, the Bee Orchid requires a symbiotic relationship with a specific type of fungus to grow successfully, making transplanting difficult. This orchid is smarter than it looks; The flowers are almost entirely self-pollinating in the northern ranges, but the color and shape of the flower mimics the look and smell of a female bee, which attracts male bees to mate, thus speeding up the pollination process!
