People with a literal pain in the butt (buttock/glute pain), Piriformis Syndrome, or even sciatica (sciatic nerve pain down the leg) often ask: Is walking a good or bad idea? Is it safe or okay to walk when dealing with these issues? The answer is simple- but you may need to do a little testing. Here's how!
So, the short and general answer is that as long as it’s not painful (or there’s very little pain while walking)- then walking is fine!
But, if walking causes pain in your back, butt, or leg to increase (more pain the longer you walk or pain that is moderate to severe while walking) then I DO NOT recommend walking and pushing through pain.
Here's the good news though... that doesn’t mean you can’t find CREATIVE, outside-the-box ways to walk with less pain. And better yet, you can use walking as an opportunity for a learning experience. Just takes a little self-testing.
If walking forward is yucky, then try walking backwards, try walking sideways right, then side-stepping left. Try walking uphill (incline) or downhill (decline). There are many possibilities.
What’s cool about moving your body different ways and changing directions when you walk is that it gives you clues. Clues as to what your body likes and doesn’t like. And from there, we can begin testing to find what motion will eventually make you better (the motion you can use as medicine).
Once we find the motion that improves how you move and walk- then we can bottle it up and optimize the movement prescription (dose, frequency, and timing).
So, instead of stopping walking completely, think outside-the-box and find creative ways to keep yourself moving in an enjoyable, safe way.
