Viola Davis is the first black actor to have won an Oscar, an Emmy, and a Tony. Growing up, she says she lived in rat-infested apartments and sometimes had to look for food in city trash cans or steal from supermarkets. But at 7, she discovered theater and dreamed of becoming an actress.
At 23, she received a scholarship at The Juilliard School for acting. She was then noticed by filmmaker Steven Soderbergh, who offered her a part in the film "Out of Sight." Years later, her part in "The Help" put her in the limelight and got her nominated for an Oscar, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globes. In 2012, she was included in Time Magazine's list of the 100 Most Influential People. At 51, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Outside of acting, Davis has helped fight against child malnutrition, for women's empowerment, and has spoken out about unequal pay between white actors and actors of color. Today, she continues her journey as a committed actor and activist.
