"Family isn't everything if they hurt you" is something I tell so many of my clients who feel burdened by their toxic and unhealthy family relationships.
All families have challenges and no one family is perfect.
But when you are repeatedly hurt and condemed or feeling isolated, it may be time to re-think some of the ways society has taught us to think about our families.
As a psychotherapist with 15 years experience, I have had a lot of personal and professional experience that has shown me that:
1. Family isn't everything when they hurt you over and over again. Although there may be some family members who make mistakes and deserves your forgiveness, you truly have to know what you are dealing with in order to make a healthy decision for you.
2. "Family is everything" is a wonderful fantasy. But this isn't true for everyone.
Consider that if your toxic family dies, is abusive and neglectful, or has caused trauma in your life, will you really want to stick around? Should you?
3. You also want to ask yourself if you feel any loving connection with your family and if you do not, you may want to re-think how you see family.
