Gradina Fortress is located at 334 meters above sea level and is the only preserved fortress in the city of Drniš. This cultural monument is located on its southwestern part and from it, one can see Petrovo polje, the canyon of the Čikola River, as well as part of Drniš. It is part of the system of fortifications to which Bogočin-grad, Kamičak, Ključica and Nečven belong, all of which are located along the Čikola and Krka rivers.
Archaeological remains date back to the Bronze Age, and the fort completely lost its importance at the end of the 19th century, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. What remains today is the southern part of the fortress, the greater part of the central tower and the northeastern defensive wall from the Ottoman era, when Drniš was an important center of the region.
When Drniš was occupied by Venice, one of their generals had a large part of Gradina demolished, but they soon rebuilt it again because the danger from the Ottomans didn't completely disappear. Three bastions were built then, of which only negligible remains remain today.
The central tower is approximately 14.3 meters high today, and is believed to have had four floors in the past. The thickness of the walls ranges from 60 cm to 120 cm.
