he Jaguar XJS is a luxury grand tourer manufactured and marketed by British car manufacturer Jaguar Cars from 1975 to 1996, in coupé, fixed-profile and full convertible body styles. The XJ-S was introduced on September 10th, 1975. The design and development had begun in the late 1960s under the code name project XJ27 with an initial shape penned by Malcolm Sayer. After Sayer's death in 1970, it was completed by the in-house Jaguar design team headed by Doug Thorpe. The Jaguar V12 engine's power came with a choice of a manual or an automatic transmission. In 1975 there were no mass produced V12-powered production automobiles, and there were only five European car manufacturers mass produced vehicles with V12 engines.
XJS distinct iterations:
Pre-HE (1975–1981): This was the original version of the XJS, and it was powered by a 5.3-liter Jaguar V12 engine. It was available in coupé and convertible body styles.
HE (1981–1991): This was a facelifted version of the XJS, and it got its name from the "High Efficiency" engine which was a more fuel-efficient version of the V12. It was also available in a targa top body style.
XJ Cabriolet (1986–1997): This was a convertible version of the Jaguar XJ saloon. It was the first convertible XJ since the E-Type, and it was available with either a 3.6-liter or 4.0-liter Jaguar V6 engine.
Initially, critics found the XJS to be too big and heavy for a sports car. Only 1,245 Jaguar XJS cars were sold during its first year of production. However, sales of the XJS picked up in the following years, and a total of 115,413 XJS were produced over its 21-year production run.
#FunFact: After Jaguar was bought by Ford in 1989, for marketing reasons, it was decided to remove the hyphen from the title, marketing Jaguar's longest running model.
