The World's Best Lightest EDC Knife The Benchmade 535 Bugout Knife Review
First and foremost I am no a knife expert and will speak from a layman’s point of view and how I use the knife in my daily life.
Good: One of the first things you will notice about this knife is that it looks good. It is a bright electric blue and when you visit a store and see a case full of black, gray, and silver knives a bright blue one jumps out at you. Beyond just looking good the blue handle makes the knife easy to spot if you drop it especially if you drop it on a dark surface like on blacktop or a hiking trail.
Good: The Benchmade Bugout is super lightweight coming in at just 1.85 ounces. You can slip this knife to your pocket and not even realize it’s there. Also if you are putting together a go bag or Bugout bag and every ounce counts then rest assured you can have a high performing quality knife on with you without adding a bunch of weight to your kit.
Good: The Benchmade 535 Bugout has a really nice drop point shaped blade made out of S30V steel. I like to think the V stands for Valerian as in Arya killing the Night King Valerian steel. S30V steel is a very high grade durable steel that is excellent at retaining an edge. So, people like me who are not the best at sharpening knives this blade is not going to need as much maintenance as other cheaper lower quality blades. Also, the Bugout comes out of the box razor sharp so be careful you don’t need to sharpen it before first use, just take it out of the box and put it to work.
Good: The Bugout is a manual opening knife but is has the Benchmade axis locking mechanism on it so the knife is really easy to open and close one handed. With just the flick of your thumb you can open it and using the axis lock you can quickly, easily and one handed close it. Also, because it’s a manual opening knife it’s going to be legal pretty much everywhere whereas, other knives like automatic knives, out the front knives and assisted opening knives can be illegal in certain places.
Bad: The Benchmade Bugout is expensive. I bought mine from REI and it was $120. Now for people that are not serious knife enthusiast $120 seems like a ridiculous amount of money for a pocket knife and this is the most expensive knife I have ever owned but also the nicest. However, if you want great steel, solid construction and a lifetime warranty then you are going to have to pay for it.
All in all this a wonderful knife to own. I almost didn’t buy it because I didn’t want a manual opening knife. I really wanted an automatic but they are not legal to carry in my state. I also wanted an assisted opening knife but when I saw the Bugout it just called to me. I was worried about being able to effectively open it quickly one handed but as it turned out it took me less than five minutes to get used to opening it manually. I would still love to see a spring assisted version with a flipper and I would like to have more color options like one in orange or yellow but for now I am more than happy with this knife and expect to own it for years to comes.
