Last week’s Documinute was about Levent’s family inviting non-Muslim people to an Iftar Dinner during the month of Ramadan in order to get to know each other and understand each other a bit better. While being a fly on the wall and watching the guests interact with their hosts, I thought this would be a lovely opportunity to document the same event from two perspectives.
Carey invited us into her home to chat about the evening and why she chose to take her two children with her to attend a dinner in a stranger’s home…but not just a stranger, a stranger who is already by definition going to be so different to them. After the dinner Carey asked her children what they thought: Derryn said they should go to dinner again and Reagan, in his teenage way, said ‘it wasn’t so bad’. I agree…it was pretty great.
If you would also like to get involved in something similar the Turquoise Harmony Institute is a Turkish Muslim run organisation in South Africa with the goal of bringing people (Muslim and non-Muslim) together through organised events, dinners and even trips: www.turquoise.org.za
