The infamous Anzob Tunnel ... rare occasion you'll find us deliberately offset behind a truck. Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have suffered from long-term diplomatic disputes, which makes this tunnel strategically significant ... Tajik traffic transiting to the north previously had to pass through Uzbekistan. Initially built unfinished by Iranian workers, the tunnel was opened in 2006 ... 5,040m long at 2,700m elevation ... and quickly became dubbed the 'Tunnel of Death'. There was little lighting and no ventilation ... people have reportedly died when left trapped in traffic jams. The tunnel was a maze of deep potholes hidden under a constant stream of flooding water ... truly frightening stuff. Fortunately in 2014 the Iranian government signed an agreement to finish the tunnel and it was reopened in late 2015. She's still not flash ... and of course still have the lunatic drivers in a confined space to worry about. Our truck shield impressively hugged the gutter the whole way ... clearly a key assumption when the engineers did the tunnel width calcs :)
