End of History: New Conflict, New Players, Old Ambitions in World Politics

The fall of the Berlin Wall introduced a new era in international politics: “The End of History,” as described by the title of Francis Fukuyama’s fabled essay. For a few years, it appeared that ideological conflicts would be over, and that liberal democracy had won; but, this was not the case. A brief moment of unipolarity, with the USA at the top, is over. Great power conflicts have resumed in Europe as well as in the Pacific. Ideological and power-political conflicts unfold within the Islamic world. What is the nature of the threat: cultural or strategic, between states or civilizations? Can balance and order be restored amidst the asymmetries of power and purpose?
