In 1820, Schoolcraft accompanied the Cass Expedition in its survey of the Michigan Territory. On June 13th, 1820, the expedition made their way from Mackinac Island to De Tour.
Regarding pronunciation, Mackinac is usually pronounced ending with a long A and a silent C - sometimes spelled "Mackinaw". The root word, Michilimackinac, however, is pronounced ends with a hard C. Schoolcraft's spelling makes it clear he is using a contraction - ie 'Mackinac. Therefor I have chosen to pronounce it as ending with a hard C.
