3.4.2 Explain the significance of complementary base pairing in the conservation of the base sequence of DNA.
When DNA replication takes place, the original base sequence of DNA is conserved as a result of complimentary base pairing. In DNA, Adenine (A) bonds with Thymine (T), and Guanine (G) bonds with Cytosine (C).
The template from the original DNA molecule was used, using complimentary base pairing, to create a new strand. Each of the new strands is complementary to the template on which it was made and identical to the other template. Ultimately what this means is that two new 'daughter' DNA molecules are produced that are identical not only to each other, but to the original 'parent' DNA molecule.
