1. Defense attorney at podium, UPSOUND (English): "Our client is responsible for this crime. He will spend the rest of his life locked away and eventually he will die in state prison. We hope that knowing he will never be free again will offer some small bit of comfort to those that he hurt so much. Some of those most affected by his crime have expressed a need to know whether our client is remorseful, remorseful for what he did and the devastation that he caused. We are aware; however, that for others, any expression of remorse would be meaningless. And the very sight of him or the sound of his voice can be painful. At this time, he has a brief statement to make. His words are not in any way intended to inflict any further pain on those that have already suffered, and we hope that they do not do so. Thank you.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Payton Gendron, Buffalo supermarket shooter:
“I'm very sorry for all the pain I forced the victims and their families to suffer through. I'm very sorry for stealing the lives of your loved ones. I cannot express how much I regret all the decisions I made leading up to actions on May 14th. I did a terrible thing that day. I shot and killed people because they were Black. Looking back now, I can't believe I actually did it. I believed what I read online and acted out of hate. And now I can't take it back. But I wish I could. And I don't want anyone to be inspired by me and what I did.”

STORYLINE:
A white supremacist who killed 10 Black people at a Buffalo supermarket was sentenced to life in prison without parole after listening to the relatives of his victims express the pain and rage caused by his racist attack.
Wednesday’s sentencing hearing for Payton Gendron was disrupted briefly when he was charged by a man in the audience, who was quickly restrained.
Gendron, whose hatred was fueled by racist conspiracy theories he encountered online, cried during some of the testimony and apologized to victims in a brief statement. The judge imposed separate sentences of life without parole, one for each victim, to run concurrently. She also denied giving Gendron youthful offender status, which might have given him a chance to reenter society.
Gendron pleaded guilty to charges including murder and domestic terrorism motivated by hate. That last crime carried an automatic life sentence.
He still faces federal charges that could result in a death sentence if prosecutors choose to seek it.
