Got a music therapy or music teacher SUB? Make a fun video for them of your Hello Song! This is a video I made for my classes when I am out and they have a substitute. Consistency is important for kids with special needs so we always start with the Hello Song whether I am there or not. They always comment when I get back about watching the video of me saying hi!
The first part of this song is adapted from a version I learned in Sprouting Melodies training, written by fellow Board Certified Music Therapist, Meredith Pizzi. She’s a rockstar MT-BC and owner of Roman Music Therapy services in Boston.
The middle part I wrote to engage my students with what day of the week it is, morning or afternoon, and to check in with them about how they’re feeling that day, at that time. They are asked to “come up with a word besides good” and their responses are creative each time as they look for new words. It’s really been helpful for me to learn to avoid saying “I’m good” too. There’s so many more colorful words we can use.
The “Respect” song I also wrote to explain my 3 Simple rules in my class. They respond well to the slow melody, repetition of the word Respect and it helps them remember the words to sing them. Because it’s just C chord and A minor chord we also enjoy playing the “Respect” song together on the ukulele sometimes. C and A minor are two super easy one finger chords!
