Usually during back surgery what we do is we retract the nerves. Retracting in the sense we push the nerves to one side so that we can work in a nerveless field so there will be some traction injury of the nerves which will exhibit as some numbness but this numbness will not stay permanently. It will be there for some time and gradually it improves. Sometimes it may be there for 1 month, 2 months, sometimes 3 months. By that time it usually resolves.
