Greetings. I'm Tim of Govberg, and welcome to the world of IWC. Today I'll be your guide to the features of the IWC Aquatimer Automatic 2000 Edition 35 Years Ocean 2000 in titanium. This is reference 3291-01.
Let's start with the strap, because this is where the ergonomic equation of any dive watch begins. A traditional IWC satin-finished titanium pin buckle makes for easy adjustability, as does a natural vulcanized rubber bellows style diving strap. Now, the advantage of the bellows is double. Flexibility, yes, but also the ability to aerate the wrist to allow moisture, sweat, grit, and sand to escape during dives or simply during hot weather use. The clever quick-release system can be seen underlug on both sides. A simple pull of the tab removes the strap for closer cleaning or to put the watch on a different accessory band. No tools are required, you need only your fingernail.
Now, the timepiece is part of a limited series of 350 dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the Series 3500 IWC Portia Design Ocean 2000 Dive Watches, broadly used by diving professionals, enthusiasts, and military alike. The watches were landmarks in both aesthetics and technical achievement. This watch pays homage to that historic series as a limited edition featuring the titanium construction and the tritone dial of that original Ocean 2000. Dominant black, white accents, and shocks of red. On the underside you can see the emblematic diving helmet as well as the notation that this watch is water resistant to 200 bar, or 2000 meters, just like its historical predecessor. The screwed-in case back and the screwed-down crown endow the watch with immense water resistance.
Though it is a large, utility style timepiece, it is not without art and grace. You can see the sharp geometries of the watch are both functional and masculine, but fine finish is not neglected. Note the contrast between the satin finish of the lug hoods and profiles against the hairline polished bevels. The same treatment can be seen along the flanks of the case over the differential housing the safe dive system, more on that in a moment, as well as the profile of the bezel, which is alternately satin-finished and polished.
Now, since the first IWC Aquatimer in 1967, IWC has proposed different methods of maintaining the security of a dive-style bezel. The unidirectional internal safe dive system uses the geared ratcheting differential that allows you to align the luminescent bezel with the minute hand or the hour hand as you desire, to create an impromptu circular chronograph. If you want to time your dive, or even if you want to time something as simple as cooking, intervals between meetings, even the kid's timeout, this safe dive system gives you an easy way of providing reference, and mechanically robust, absolutely secure. If you are going to engage in professional diving, this is an outstanding mechanical solution that allows the bezel itself to be luminescent, unlike a conventional dive watch.
Now, you can see that the dial has both depth and contrast. Superb legibility. You can see the indices are raised. It glows like an absolute torch at night, providing immense practicality whether you're diving or simply a cellar dweller dreaming in your basement. The bottom line is, the watch provides equally for both. You can see that you'll never need a date while diving, but for easy reference while creating correspondence, dating emails, there's a low key monotone date disc window at 3:00. It's there when you want it, it disappears when you do not.
Inside the case IWC provides an automatic caliber 3120 with a 42 hour power reserve. It pivots on 21 jewels, and it features two useful functions for more precise setting of the time. Now, it's important to note that one of them is stop seconds, so you can halt hours, minutes, and seconds hands to synchronize against a known accurate reference time, such as your dive timer or an online atomic clock. Furthermore, there is a quick set function for the date such that you can rapidly cycle should the watch run down or encounter an irregular length month. You can see this 35th anniversary celebration of the original IWC Ocean 2000, one of 350 made, along with the entire IWC collection of premium timepieces on our website, govbergwatches.com.
