A large tornado hit Louisiana Wednesday afternoon, after causing damage in Texas and Oklahoma. The violent tornado hit the New Orleans metro area damaging multiple structures and taking down power lines.
At approximately 4:30 p.m. local time, videos and photos on social media showed street completely torn up by the storm, sending debris flying. The tornado is being accompanied by heavy rain.
In addition, roofing material and building insulation rushing out of buildings at the Canal Street tourist hotspot.
A Winn Dixie supermarket in the Marrero section of New Orleans saw its store completely flattened by the violent storm. More than 40,000 energy customers had power knocked out during the severe storms, according to the region's main utility provider.
Residents are urged to stay home even though thousands are without power due to downed power lines in the area. At least 36 tornadoes have been reported since Tuesday from Oklahoma and Texas eastward to Louisiana and Mississippi.
