(21 Feb 2022) Austria's chancellor has called upon Russian President Vladimir Putin to work for peace.
Speaking at a press briefing in Vienna on Monday Chancellor Karl Nehammer said that "Putin had achieved (…) to present the Russian Federation as a military superpower. I would say he succeeded. Now it is important that President Putin uses his military might for peace in Europe."
Asked whether Russia recognizing the independence of separatist areas in Ukraine would trigger sanctions, Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said that sanctions would be coordinated within the European Union and there wouldn't be "individual opinions."
However, he said the developments make clear again that Russia is "proceeding according to a script here."
"But one also sees that a component of caution is also always built into the script, also from the Russian Federation's side -- which gives me the hope that President Putin doesn't say yes immediately, but that he will examine it," Nehammer said.
He added that the resulting "narrow window" of opportunity must be used.
