@500(+/-) People are Dying Each Week - NHS is Broken... Senior medic’s warning as hospitals struggle with staff shortages, surgery backlogs, flu and Covid-19. As many as 500 people are dying each week because of delays in emergency NHS care, a senior doctor has said.
Dr Adrian Boyle, president of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM), said that a bad flu season was piling pressure on to services that were already critically overstretched.
A collapse in ambulance response times, gridlock in A&E units and soaring rates of staff turnover were contributing to avoidable deaths, he said. Although figures such as ambulance response times and staff vacancies are published regularly, it is impossible to know the exact number of excess deaths caused by serious problems within the health service. The NHS has been struggling for some years as waiting lists grow alongside record vacancies and missed targets for A&E admissions, ambulance handovers and 999 callout times.
