ULTRAMAN: RISING: THE JAPANESE “SPIDERVERSE”?
#UltramanRising is the new Netflix animated film inspired by the popular Japanese hero, directed by Shannon Tindle and produced by Netflix Animation in conjunction with Tsuburaya Productions, the story is a reinvention of the classic hero Ultraman, with a different origin story than before Seen, this movie talks about the importance of family and redemption.
In this film the protagonist is Ken Sato, an arrogant baseball player who leads a double life as the hero Ultraman, the defender of Japan who fights against creatures called kaiju trying to balance his life as a hero with baseball. But in one of his missions he faces the kaiju Gigantron with whom he has a confrontation that results in the supposed death of the kaiju and Ultraman finding a kaiju egg, the baby is born and now Ken Sato is forced to take care of the baby while fighting against a secret anti-kaiju organization.
I really think that it is a fairly simple film in terms of its narrative, it is a children's story that introduces us to the well-known Japanese character seen from a new perspective, if you are a long-time fan of Ultraman you may be a little disappointed when you see this film, It is not bad but it is not what tokusatsu fans would expect either since it is full of clichés, scenes that we have seen thousands of times and a fairly simple plot, even so I think that the way all of this was presented to us makes the film a product enjoyable for all audiences.
Definitely the strength of this film is in its animation, obviously Netflix has presented us with incredible animated products in recent years and Ultraman Rising could not be the exception, its animation style is a bit reminiscent of the Ultraman anime series (also available in Netflix, by the way) and the saga of Spider-Man: Into/Across The Spider-Verse, in that technical section the film is a delight for the eye, with those futuristic Tokyo visuals and that 3D anime-like aesthetic that really make it the experience is worth it.
In general, I would say that it is a family movie to pass the time, it is not the eighth wonder of the world, but it fulfills the task of being a fun and entertaining product, suitable for all audiences, and surely with a sequel on the way, so we have to wait.
My rating for this movie is: 6/10
