The DIEP flap is a method of breast reconstruction that involves transferring tissue, skin and fat, from the abdomen to the chest to make a breast mound after a mastectomy. This method of reconstruction requires the use of a microscope to connect vessels from the tissue to vessels in the chest to restore blood flow. DIEP is and acronyms for deep inferior epigastric perforator flap and identifies the blood vessels that are connected to keep the transferred tissue alive. Women who undergo a DIEP flap also derive benefit from the tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) flattening effect that occurs in the abdomen and midsection of the body. In this video Dr. Weinfeld touches on some of the details of this exciting method of breast reconstruction.
