Shoulder impingement - or rotator cuff impingement - is a condition we used to call tendinitis or bursitis of the shoulder. If you have shoulder impingement, you may experience pain when reaching overhead, out away from the body, or behind your back. The pain can be mild to severe, but it almost never needs surgery. It usually resolves with physical therapy, home exercises, and occasionally medication.
