CHOREOGRAPHY OF THE AIR - MICHIGAN CHAMBER PLAYERS - January 26, 2020
CLAUDE DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Rapsodie pour orchestre avec saxophone (1903-1911), version pour saxophone alto, saxophone soprano et piano, arr. Alberto Tarraga (2017)
MATTHEW KOESTER, soprano saxophone
TIMOTHY McALLISTER, alto saxophone
KATHRYN GOODSON, piano
Both of Debussy’s solo wind instrumental rhapsodies were showcased by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance (SMTD) in the January 2020 Michigan Chamber Players (MCP) concert, Choreography of the Air. In this captured live recording of the Rapsodie in its recent trio version for two saxophones and piano, the performers were all part of the SMTD community: Matthew Koester, DMA Saxophone Performance student in his first year; Timothy McAllister, Associate Professor of Saxophone; and Kathryn Goodson, pianist-coach across Voice, WPID, Dance and DEI Departments. Choreography of the Air featured overt and inferred connections to Dance in works by J.S. Bach, Jay Cloidt, Steve Reich, and in Debussy's Chansons de Bilitis as well as his two rhapsodies for solo clarinet and solo saxophone. The departments of Keyboard, Organ & Carillon, WPID, Strings and Dance were represented in the concert, which was curated by Dr. Kathryn Goodson and Prof. Christian Matijas-Mecca, Associate Chair of Dance, at the invitation of Chamber Music Department Chair and MCP Director, Matt Albert.
