Music, dancing and ceremony - all of these are important to Chile's indigenous people as they celebrate the winter solstice.
The National Corporation for Indigenous Development (CONADI) proposed the Ceremony of Change of Cycle as a momentous event to showcase the rich sociocultural practices of the Aymara, Rapa Nui, and Mapuche peoples, representing the north, Easter Island, and the south of Chile, respectively.
This joyous occasion not only honored their heritage but also marked the approaching new year, coinciding with the winter solstice.
Politician Giorgio Jackson, the Social Development and Family Secretary, emphasized the significance of the celebration.
For the Indigenous people attending the event had special significance. Carmen Montupil Curin, a Mapuche representative emphasized that despite being in a city of concrete the ceremony gave the Indigenous people a chance to carve out a space for themselves.
