Microsoft Excel Tutorial: Solve Compatibility Mode & Access New Features.
Welcome back to the MrExcel netcast! In this episode, we're going to tackle a common issue that many Excel users face - compatibility mode. We all know that Excel is a powerful tool for analyzing large amounts of data, but what happens when you try to open a new workbook and find yourself limited to only 65,000 rows? That's where compatibility mode comes in, and it's not always a good thing.
In this video, I'll show you how to solve this problem and get back to using all the new features and functions that Excel has to offer. I recently received an email from Gary, who was experiencing this exact issue. He pressed Ctrl+N for a new workbook, only to find himself in compatibility mode with limited rows. This can be frustrating, especially when you're trying to take advantage of all the new features in Excel 2007.
So, what's causing this issue? Well, it turns out that someone had changed the default file setting on Gary's computer to save files in the Excel 97-2003 format. This means that every time he opens a new workbook, it starts in compatibility mode. This is not ideal, as it limits access to all the new features and functions in Excel 2007. In fact, it's a setting that was even recommended by tech journalist Walt Mossberg, which I have to say is some of the worst advice I've ever heard.
But don't worry, I'll show you how to fix this issue in just a few simple steps. By changing the default file setting back to either an Excel Workbook or an Excel Macro Enabled Workbook, you can avoid compatibility mode and have access to all the new features in Excel 2007. No more having to constantly up-convert your files just to use the latest and greatest features. So, if you're experiencing this issue, follow along with me in this video and let's get you back to using Excel to its full potential. Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe to the MrExcel netcast for more helpful tips and tricks. See you next time!"

A question from Gary: Why does Excel 2007 open with only 65,536 rows? Wouldn't Microsoft want to show off the cool functionality available in Excel 2007 without forcing you to up convert each worksheet? Episode 953 discusses the unfortunate setting causing this problem.
