Mastoiditis is basically an inflammation or swelling or infection of the mastoid. Mastoid bone is the bone which reservoirs or which houses the hearing mechanism. So whenever it is infected, it is called as mastoiditis. Most of the time there are two types of mastoiditis. One is an acute mastoiditis, or a chronic mastoiditis. An acute mastoiditis is an acute emergency as the name suggests it has to be treated as soon as possible. In all probabilities it will be treated as soon as possible because the patient will have acute symptoms like pain, fever, headache, ear discharge, hearing loss there are so many symptoms that usually prompts the a patient to see the doctor as soon as possible. In this cases, the doctor will probably have a look at the drum and the mastoid cavity through the x-ray or a CT scan and start proper medication, which can include antibiotics or anti-inflammatory that the doctor will decide on examination. There is another condition called as the chronic mastoiditis. This usually is a latent or a very quiet disease, where the patient may not have an acute pain or a severe pain, but it warrants justice or treatment if it is associated with hearing loss or ear discharge or headache. So if you have any problem with the ear, like ear discharge or hearing loss, or a mild headache to one side of the ear, it is essential that you meet your ENT surgeon as soon as possible so that a proper management can be initiated.
