The Shakuhachi Yuu - played 'zen' style
(I need to find a better way to record endblown flutes, mic was too close to my mouth I think which causes the hissing noise and the squeaks... anyways...)
For those who doesn't know, shakuhachi yuu is a 2-piece plastic shakuhachi made using a mold of a very good professional bamboo shakuhachi. As you can see in my other video showing the adaptor attachment, it does have that faux bamboo look, which divides people's opinions. Some think it makes the yuu pretentious, others just love it.
Aesthetic aside, how does it perform?
Key of D, which is the most common of all shakuhachi length. Other than the fact that it is somewhat heavy-ish, it is dead accurate in pitch, it plays wonderfully, and it is one of the really good options for serious beginners who want to get into the complete shakuhachi playing experience.
The richness of the tone is amazing. In this video, I played the notes quite breathy because I'm trying to emulate that 'zen'-like sound, but it can also 'honk' quite crisply. Basically, you can do anything that professional shakuhachi players do with their thousand dollar flutes with this. It is also very low maintenance, it will never crack because of the extreme weather conditions, and it makes a good backup flute that will last a very long time.
