Kimberly Peeler-Allen, a visiting practitioner at Rutgers University, said the tropes and attacks on Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s running mate, are just as “vicious” as they were in 2008 and 2016 when former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ran for president. But she added that Harris faces overt racism, as well. She gave credit to voters, though, for “looking at the totality of a woman’s experience” more today than they have in the past: “[That’s] why we are seeing so many women win in this moment even though the sexism and racism have not dissipated at all.” Peeler-Allen joined political reporter Daniel Bush to discuss the role of women in U.S. politics on the anniversary of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote.
