Ciao from the Dolomites! This is the first part of our travel vlog series from the iconic Dolomites.
We flew into Verona, picked up a hire car, and drove the short distance to Lake Garda. We spent a day exploring its eastern shore, visiting Lazise, Garda and Malcesine. We then drove up towards Val Gardena in the Dolomites. We took the cable car up to Seceda then hiked down to the village of Ortisei.
This mountain range in northeastern Italy's South Tyrol is known for its dramatic jagged peaks and stunning alpine scenery. It was declared UNESCO World Heritage in 2009 for its extraordinary beauty and its geological and geomorphical significance.
Our tips:
⛰️ We parked in Ortisei and take the cable cars up. We bought a one way ticket, which cost around €30, and walked down. To be honest, the steep walk down was so hard on our knees we did think it could be more enjoyable walking up instead! Either way, unless you have heaps of time, you'll probably need to take a cable car one of the ways.
⛰️ Including a stop at a Rifugio for an Aperol Spritz (oh the joys of hiking in the Italian Alps) and many stops just to enjoy the view, the hike from the cable car to Ortisei took 5 hours.
⛰️ Like many hikes in the Dolomites, this isn't a hidden gem - there will undoubtedly be lots of other people on this beautiful hike so don't expect to have the lush meadows all to yourself. However, the majority of hikers take the cable car both ways so it becomes much more peaceful the further you are from the peak.
