Fresh Gear Friday: Doc Sweeney Drums 14” x 6.5” Elm PURE steam-bent snare drum

Patrick Sweeney (who the company is named after) and Steve Stecher (founder) have been friends for over forty years. They loved drums, but life took over and they both settled into corporate careers. Years later, around 2018 or so, they came back together to return to their passion of drums.

This became the catalyst for the foundation of a company created to build high quality instruments for drummers looking for unique, sonically pleasing drums.

This Doc Sweeney Drums 14” x 6.5” Elm PURE, 8 lug snare drum is one of those drums and I’m excited to put it through the ringer.

The Pure series shells are created to produce the most resonant drum possible. They use an advanced milling techniques to produce a steam bent shell without glued support-rings. Through the milling process, the shell wall thickness is milled to 5/16”, leaving the bearing edges at 1/2”.

This particular series of drums are available in Ash, Elm, and Oak.

Really pleased with the depth and presence this shell delivers. Additionally, it’s been a minute since I have used a UV1 so it’s definitely a slight adjustment for sure.

- Shell wall thickness is milled to 5/16", leaving the bearing edges at 1/2"
- Steam bent Elm shell with no glued re-rings.
- 45 degree round over bearing edges
- Triple-flange hoops
- DS1 strainer
- 16 strand wires
- Satin hand-rubbed oil finish
