The exercise challenge is an opportunity to explore in depth the content from the portal and to tell your own story about the Central Asia region, using the various data sets! If you would like to try new ways of presenting the Central Asia development situation, environmental resources and risks, this exercise is for you!
Central Asia Water & Energy Data Portal: [ Ссылка ]
The Central Asia Water & Energy Data Portal is available in English and Russian language and covers the five countries of Central Asia including Afghanistan. The data portal includes many new high-quality datasets available from a number of institutions (e.g. UN agencies, NASA, NOAA, CIESIN, IRI, The World Bank, etc.) that still are little-known especially in the developing world. It contains datasets on various topics, such as: Environment, Social, Economic, Climate, Water, and Disaster. The data portal also contains so-called story maps, which present World Bank projects in Central Asia by making use of interactive maps.
The Central Asia Water & Energy Data Portal is an initiative developed under the World Bank’s Central Asia Water & Energy Program (CAWEP) and aims to improve access to data by collecting existing publicly available spatial data produced by many different organizations on water and energy related issues in Central Asia on one single platform. The Central Asia Water and Energy Data Portal was established in June 2019.
How it works:
• The Portal provides a variety of spatial data, including water information and imagery. Each spatial resource is linked through a data tile. You can filter the data tiles by sector. For example, if you click on ‘Environmental,’ you will only be shown the spatial resources related to environment. Click the title to access the visualization service.
• Additionally, some datasets are downloadable directly from the Portal. The downloadable datasets have a download icon on the tile. The data provided can be used for visualization and for analysis in commercial (i.e. ESRI ArcGIS) and open source (i.e. QGIS) products.
The Central Asia Water & Energy Data Portal was created based on the Spatial Agent Concept. Spatial Agent ([ Ссылка ]) was developed by the World Bank as a demonstrating tool, showing how public domain information could be used, and gathering global datasets into a single platform. Spatial agent was initially developed as a mobile app, providing access to hundreds of data set, available from mobile devices. A web-version was further designed based on the app content. Spatial Agent pulls together thousands of datasets from over 300 web services. There is no ownership of the data. The platform is linking the relevant information to the system and visualizes it.
