The mid-cycle update provides a much-needed interior makeover to the GMC Sierra lineup for 2022.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 full-size pickup has received a mid-cycle update that substantially enhances the inside, as well as two new trim levels to broaden the truck's range of luxury and off-road performance.

GMC focused on two main sub-brands: the opulent Denali and the off-road-oriented AT4, and extended their range. The moves make sense as well, with the top Denali trim accounting for 20% of Sierra 1500 sales and the AT4 accounting for 25%. Executives at the company chose to promote both sides of the spectrum. The new Denali Ultimate is the most expensive vehicle in the lineup. The most capable off-road version is now known as AT4X, reflecting a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado line-up upgrade that included the off-road ZR2 specification. The additions boost the overall number of trim options for Sierra to eight.

While there are some powertrain upgrades and the advent of Super Cruise hands-free highway driving help, the remodeling done on the inside is the major news for the 2022 Sierra lineup. The cabin of the departing Sierra was lagging behind the competitors. The interior of the Ram 1500 has set the bar high, and the interiors of the Ford F-150 are a close second; on the other hand, the GM trucks suffered from too much plastic, antiquated switchgear, and small screens.

GMC Sierra Denali Ultimate and AT4X Get a New Look

GMC updates the Sierra 1500's exterior with a new grille and split-C headlights that illuminate as the driver approaches the car and fade away when the driver walks out the door. Animated lighting has been a popular trend in the automotive industry, and GM has adopted it on a number of new and upcoming models.

The Denali Ultimate has a dark grille with dark GMC badging, chrome skid plates, and 22-inch wheels, whilst the AT4X has a dark nickel grille with AT4X badging and a high gloss black skid plate. It also retains the 2021 Sierra AT4's characteristic red tow hooks.

GMC Sierra AT4X Off-Roading in 2022

If you choose the AT4X, you'll get new dynamic suspension spool valve (DSSV) dampers at all four corners (similar to the ones used to great effect on Chevy's Colorado ZR2) for improved on-road performance and ride quality without sacrificing off-road capability. Optional rock sliders to protect the rocker panel region are now available.

The AT4X has front and rear e-locking differentials, each of which may be engaged with a single button press. The AT4X is the only car with this feature; the AT4 has merely a locking rear differential.

Another distinguishing feature is the Sierra AT4X's Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal rock crawling thanks to the two-speed transfer case. When compared to the normal AT4 suspension, rear wheel travel was extended by 1.0 inch and front wheel travel was increased by 2.0 inch. The AT4X has the same suspension lift as the AT4, but it has greater travel to work with over rough terrain. Do you want to put your Sierra off-road to the test?
