(4 Feb 2014) FREED PUSSY RIOT MEMBERS MAKE FIRST U.S. APPEARANCE AT PRESS CONFERENCE
Members of the punk rock band Pussy Riot made their first U.S. public appearance Tuesday (4 FEB. 2014) for Amnesty International's "Bringing Human Rights Home" concert.
Pussy Riot band members Nadezhda "Nadya" Tolokonnikova and Maria "Masha" Alyokhina spoke to the press at the Amnesty International offices in New York.
Three members of the band were convicted and imprisoned for 21 months for their participation in a political performance piece in Moscow last year.
Pussy Riot member Nadya recalled her time in jail, thanking Amnesty International's work to bring her justice, but said her case was no different than other Russians today.
"It's important to say that the situation that happened to us doesn't stand out from other cases in Russia it is part of a wide crack down on liberties in Russia that is happening right now," said Tolokonnikova.
The two bandmates also shared their new venture in starting a human rights organization to bring light to civil liberty abuses occuring in Russia.
"Due to what we saw in prison and due to all these things we have mentioned above, we have decided to start a human rights organization which will be called Zona Prava or the 'zone of the rights' which will be set to change all things that we believe are unjustly happening," said Alyokhina.
The concert, held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, is part of Amnesty International's goal to "amplify the human rights defenders of today and inspire the human rights defenders of tomorrow".
Top-charting artists including Imagine Dragons, Tegan and Sara, and The Flaming Lips, join the headliners Wednesday night (Feb. 5) with a special introduction by Madonna.
