Test of how woks a mercury tilt switch and a magnetic reed switch. They are connected in series in a circuit with a battery and two light bulbs.
When the mercury switch is tilted to one of its sides the contact is made and the circuit is closed.
When a magnet approaches to the reed switch the circuit is closed.
Both are useful for alarms and other automatisms.
