The 2024 BYD Sealion 6 is the emerging Chinese brand's first model in Australia that's not a fully electric vehicle. Instead, the new mid-size SUV is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). As such, it finds itself going tyre to tyre with the 'self-charging' Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Nissan X-Trail e-Power, as well as the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.
Needless to say, the Sealion 6 finds itself in the deep end from the get go, with it having to compete for sales with three very well established nameplates. At the same time, the Kia Sportage Hybrid and Hyundai Tucson Hybrid are starting to make their presences felt.
So, the Sealion 6 stands apart by offering buyers the choice between two series-parallel PHEV powertrains, with the naturally aspirated front-wheel drive producing 160kW/300Nm, while the turbocharged all-wheel drive develops a more formidable 238kW/550Nm.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis gets behind the wheel of the new Sealion 6 to find out how well it stacks up.
