In this episode, we discuss the 'New Rome', the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire (popularly know as the Byzantine Empire), otherwise known as Byzantium or Constantinople, modern day Istanbul. The term Byzantium conjures up many exotic and pejorative connotations: Labyrinthine court rituals, an alien eastern Christianity, scheming palace eunuchs, intrigue and betrayal, systematic blinding of political opponents even emperors. Here we examine the truths, the falsehoods, and the myths of Byzantium, illustrating how this city became the bedrock of European civilisation in late antiquity, whose influence is felt across the world today.
