Also, I actually misspoke in the video. To be completely correct about the biochemistry behind red hair, the MC1R gene first has a variant in its sequence, which deactivates the MC1R PROTEIN, resulting in more pheomelanin pigment produced in one’s skin and hair. I accidentally said the GENE is inactivated but that’s not exactly right. I hope this satisfies the biologists in the room!
