There are four different types of permanent teeth in an adult’s mouth, and each of the 32 teeth have an important function.
Incisors are the front teeth on the top and bottom jaws. With flat edges, these teeth are for taking the first bite and cutting into food. When aligned perfectly, incisors will line up with the bottom teeth.
There are a total of four canine teeth, each sitting on the outside of the incisors. Canines are named after dogs due to their pointy tips, and they are designed to tear and rip apart food. They also have the longest roots of all the teeth.
Premolars are only present in permanent teeth, and as with all molars, function to chew and grind to prepare food for digestion. They come after the canines, with four on the upper jaw and four on the lower.
Situated next to premolars, molars are the largest and strongest teeth in the mouth and have the same function as premolars. The only difference between molars and premolars are the number of cusps, or points. Premolars have 2 to 3 cups, while most molars have 4 cusps.
