On to Chapyer 7, one of the longer ones. I leveled up the Dual Swords so I get to use them a bit for this part. Truth be told, if I left the Dual Swords un-upgraded they'd automatically hit level 4 by story reasons later in the game. And I mean WAY later in the game, when there is exactly one group of enemies and 4 bosses left in the game. One of which you fight exclusively with the bow anyways.
8:49 - Speaking of bosses, here's one. I, uh...don't actually know this boss's name. It's a big skeleton giant. There you go. It's also not much of a threat. It has some lazy, slow, swiping attacks, a move where it spins in a circle, and a grab. That's about it really. You can rinse this guy with a fast weapon like the Dual Swords. As you do so, he'll eventually fall on his ass. This is when he's open to real damage by attacking his chest. If you land a hit with the Art of the Piercing Void, you'll take out half his HP in one attack. I managed to do that this time around, so that was pretty fun.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the tiny skeleton critters we encounter leading up to that boss. They're pretty weak but they usually come in large numbers. Their only threat is a grab they can preform, their other attacks are too weak to even consider.
Later on I leveled up the Kusarigama and give it a try, fortunately as we encounter the Imp enemy type. Imps are fast little critters that can scurry underground, grab you fast, and do some fast swipes on you. They can also fire an energy ball if they're far off.
The Kusarigama is deal for these enemies because of it's specialty. The Kusarigama can dismember humanoid enemies with 100% success by using the appropriate attack. You can take off arms, legs, even heads with the right combo. To compensate, the Kusarigama CANNOT use an Izuna Drop. So it's debatable whether it's more effective to dismember an enemy or to simply Izuna Drop them and hope for a dismemberment, because you have more safety performing an Izuna Drop instead of the Kusarigama's combos that leave it planted firmly on the ground. Also, the Kusarigama's usefulness is limited almost exclusively to humanoid enemies. It's weak as hell against things like Lycans and I absolutely do not recommend using it for them. Just switch to Enma's Fang. Well, I say that, but I actually use the Dual Swords for a good chunk of this video after that. I wanted to show them off a bit more. But I did eventually switch to Enma's Fang later when I got tired of the Lycans wailing on me.
43:40 - Volf - The second of the Four Greater Fiends. Volf is the most straight forward of the fiends and the least mobile. He doesn't move much except when he's charging you, which you should dash jump away from. He's got several long combo strings with his scythe that can break your guard, so keep on the move in between blocks or you risk being hit. He can also launch a shockwave from the ground which is unblockable so avoid that if you see him strike the Earth. There's also a very fast grab attack he has where he will impale you on the scythe and then slam you behind him. Volf really isn't all that hard though, and Enma's Fang can tear through him. Just be more patient than I was in this video and let him attack first, then move in for a combo once he lets up.
I was being particularly careless because I had a Talisman of Resurrection I just wanted to burn through. I kind of don't like having those for boss fights cuz it's not only a free full heal, but a full ninpo heal as well. To make up for it I absolutely wreck Volf in the second fight against him. And yes, we do fight him again as well as all the other Greater Fiends towards the end of the game. I also tried to experiment with using the Art of the Flame Phoenix. It can stun Volf a bit and it's whole thing is to tank a few hits for Ryu but I never found it particularly useful. I'd rather use a ninpo that gives me I-frames and deals no damage than use one that blocks damage in a limited time with the potential to run out swiftly from time passing or taking too much damage all at once.
Anyways, after defeating Volf we get his scythe and are automatically equipped with it. The scythe is good...but at level 1 we're better off just switching to Enma's Fang and wailing on the surrounding Lycans with it instead. I'll talk more about the scythe later when I use it properly, it's actually my favorite weapon in the game.
