U.S. President Joe Biden delivered remarks on Tuesday, as he signed the Instruments of Ratification for Finland and Sweden to join North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) after the U.S. Senate voted to approve their applications.
Biden was joined by Vice-President Kamala Harris, the Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other White House officials for the signing ceremony, as well as the ambassadors for Finland and Sweden.
Biden touted the overwhelming 95-1 vote by U.S. Senate last week, a rare display of bipartisan unity in a bitterly divided Washington, D.C. Both Democratic and Republican senators strongly approved membership for the two Nordic countries, describing them as important allies whose modern militaries already worked closely with NATO.
Sweden and Finland applied for NATO membership in response to Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine. Moscow has repeatedly warned both countries against joining the alliance.
NATO's 30 allies signed the accession protocol for Sweden and Finland last month, allowing them to join the nuclear-armed alliance once all member states ratify the decision.
