If you are putting in a smart switch, or any one that requires a circuit to it (hot & neutral) you will need to use a 3c down to your switch so you can bring down the Neutral as well. For a simple on/off switch like I have here a 2c is all that's needed.
If you are installing your switch in a finished wall it might be a good idea to run a 3c to future proof yourself. In this case use the red and black for the switch and just "cap" off or Marrette the white on both ends.


These are 2 tools that anyone doing electrical must have, and are the most used tools by those who earn a paycheck from using them. So important that I think I will put them at the bottom of a few of the Electrical videos I do.
These will last you 3 lifetimes as a home owner and worth every penny (these are the cheapest ones I could find with the features needed). You can get away with cheaper tools for many other scenarios but these are two that should be of high quality in my opinion. I can, and have used the same pair for decades on an Industrial job site with no issues.
